“They” are the separatists of the self-proclaimed Republic of Luhansk, supported by Russia since the 2014 war which amputated Ukraine from Crimea and part of Donbass.
“Every evening, they start shooting at us around 8 p.m.: they fire two or three mortar or heavy machine gun salvoes at us every hour, until dawn
,” says the lieutenant in a fatalistic tone.
