An earthquake with a magnitude of 5.4 occurred Sunday in northern Greece, not far from the country's second city, Thessaloniki, announced the Athens Observatory.

The epicenter of the earthquake which occurred at 11:50 GMT was located at sea 10 km deep and 23 km south-west of Mount Athos, a high place of Orthodoxy which is home to many monasteries, according to the same source.

No casualties or damage were immediately reported.

Greece is located on several seismic faults and regularly experiences earthquakes.

In October 2020, a 7.0 earthquake hit the Aegean Sea, between the Greek island of Samos and the city of Izmir in western Turkey.

Most of the damage took place in Turkey, where 114 people died and more than a thousand were injured.

In Greece, two teenagers had lost their lives in Samos.
