Renting a bike for the way to the train station or a trip to the surrounding area: this should be possible in Weyarn.

The municipality is planning two stations for the MVG-Rad rental system - with one condition.

Weyarn

– “Get off the sofa. Get on your bike.” This is the slogan used by the Munich Transport Company (MVG) to advertise its bike rental service. Users can rent a bike at more than 300 stations in and around Munich – two stations will be in Weyarn in the future. The council gave the go-ahead for the project at Thursday night's meeting. However, one condition for the decision to be implemented still has to be met. Valley, which was already open, should also take part. In the neighboring municipality, the topic is on the agenda of the municipal council on Tuesday. If the committee agrees, the MVG rental bike system will start in four communities in the district: in Holzkirchen, Otterfing, Weyarn and Valley.

As reported, these municipalities had asked the district for financial support.

The wish was only partially fulfilled.

In November, the district council rejected a contribution to the operating costs, but approved 40,000 euros for the investment - half-hearted support.

In Warngau and Waakirchen, the municipal councils waved it off completely.

The larger the network, the more attractive the system

Weyarn can count on a quarter of this money. Because Holzkirchen has agreed that the subsidy will be shared equally, explained Weyarn's Mayor Leonhard Wöhr (CSU). The market community will definitely take part in the MVG rental bike system and will be happy if the neighbors do the same. Because the bigger the network, the more attractive it is for potential customers. With regard to the investment, Weyarn would only receive a sum of around 500 euros, explained Wöhr. "However, a station in operation costs 5000 euros per year," he said. Even if a part comes back through the rental of the bikes, it will remain a deficit business. "I have no hope that money will be left over."

The route that makes the rental bike offer for Weyarn attractive and will probably be used the most is the way to the train station in Darching or from there to Weyarn.

That's why Wöhr is certain: "If Valley doesn't participate, it doesn't make sense for us."

A small building block for rethinking traffic

The project was approved by the board. Florian Holzmann-Penzenstadler (CSU) said: "We want to stand up for the bike. This is how the main town is connected to the train station." Betty Mehrer (SPD) harbored the hope that, for example, visitors to the climbing center would take the train to Darching and continue from there by bike when they hear about the rental option. Anschi Hacklinger (Greens) thought it was a small building block, but an important sign of the necessary rethinking of traffic. Her parliamentary colleague, Philipp Eikerling, promised with a smile that he would use the rental bikes diligently "so that something comes into the cash register". Katharina Wacker (SPD) saw the rental bike system as an opportunity to "take a few people with you" when switching to a bike.who don't want to ride their own expensive bike to the train station and leave it there.

These two stations are planned

Warning words came from Albert Zinsbacher (CSU).

He urged his fellow councillors, when allocating money for community volunteer services, to keep in mind that expenditures add up little by little.

Johannes Wieser (WiGW) rejected the project.

He calculated that it would cost up to 50,000 euros over ten years.

"I think that's a lot of money for a small community, especially because only some of the citizens benefit from it." Like Anton Zwickl (CSU), Wieser voted against entering the MVG rental bike system.

Should he come, however, two stations, each with five wheels, will be installed in Weyarn: in the Am Weiglfeld industrial park and at the playground on Ignaz-Günther-Straße.

But that now depends on the decision in Valley.
