Between 60-70% of school students felt depressed following the corona crisis, according to a study presented today by the Ministry of Education. The study, based on data from the Counseling Psychological Service, the Office of the Chief Scientist at the Ministry of Education and the University of Haifa, reveals that there has been a significant increase in the number of students who have experienced symptoms of varying degrees in the past two weeks. Following the findings, Education Minister Yifat Shasha-Bitton called for continuing the trend of reducing isolations and abolishing them for natives.



According to the study, about 60% of elementary school students suffer from various levels of depression, while 70% suffer from it in the same sample of middle and high school students. The report also showed that about 35% of fifth graders and above feel depressed and hopeless, 20% of them feel failure and about 15% of them have suicidal thoughts. The report also indicates a worrying 70% increase in the treatment of children at risk of suicide.



The study also states that almost half of the students in fifth grade and above feel uninterested for at least a few days, and more than 60% of them have difficulty falling asleep.

Also, about 40% of them suffer from changes in appetite.

"The most important thing is to maintain the educational routine of Israeli students, with the understanding that without the framework of children and youth degenerate into loneliness, depression, anxiety and even severe violence," said Education Minister Dr. Yifat Shasha Bitton. "Scars and social-psychological damage that we, in the education system, do everything to give them the best solution."

She referred to the proposal to shorten the students' isolations to five days, and welcomed it.

"The Ministry of Health must boldly abolish isolation for healthy children so that we can return the system to physical routine in schools and save children. The Ministry of Education will continue to take all necessary steps to ensure student health, in its various aspects, in kindergartens and schools," she said.
