It took more than four years - now a Turkish court has acquitted the German journalist Mesale Tolu.

Tolu reacted emotionally.

Istanbul/Ulm - According to her own statements, the German journalist Mesale Tolu has been acquitted by a court in Istanbul.

"After four years, eight months and 20 days: Acquitted on both counts!" Tolu wrote on Twitter on Monday.

Tolu and her husband Suat Corlu were originally accused of terrorist propaganda and supporting a terrorist organization.

Specifically, they were suspected of having supported the banned left-wing extremist group MLKP.

“In a constitutional state, such a process would not have happened in the first place.

The verdict cannot make up for the repression and the time spent in detention,” the journalist added.

Tolu was working for the leftist ETHA news agency in Istanbul when she was arrested in April 2017.

She spent several months in pre-trial detention before being conditionally released in December 2017.

In August 2018, a court lifted her ban on leaving the country so that she could return to her son in Germany.

In October 2019, the ban on leaving the country for her husband was lifted.

Turkey ranks 153rd out of 180 in Reporters Without Borders' Press Freedom Index.
