Another "
big eruption
" has been detected at the Tonga volcano which erupted three days ago and triggered a tsunami in the Pacific, an Australia-based monitoring station said on Monday (January 17th).
The last eruption was detected at 22:10 GMT on Sunday, according to an alert from the Australian Volcanic Ash Observation Center (VAAC) in Darwin. The Hawaii-based Pacific Tsunami Warning Center also said it located large waves in the area: “
This could be from another explosion of the Tonga volcano. There are no known earthquakes of significant size that generate such a wave
.”
The Tonga Islands could also be deprived of the internet for "
two weeks
", the volcanic eruption on Friday having severed an underwater communication cable, an official of the operator told AFP on Monday.
"
We're only getting patchy information, but it looks like the cable has been cut
," said Southern Cross Cable Network Director of Networks Dean Veverka, adding, "
It could take up to two weeks for the repair
”.
