When do people with a Johnson & Johnson vaccine count as boosted?

In Bavaria there is a special regulation.

All important information at a glance.

Munich – A booster vaccination can significantly increase vaccination protection against the corona virus.

To get this booster you need a third pieck - at least for everyone who was vaccinated with Astrazeneca, Moderna* or Biontech*.

But what about all those vaccinated people who received a Johnson & Johnson injection?

This is where it gets tricky.

Because for the vector-based Janssen vaccine from Johnson & Johnson, one vaccination against the coronavirus* was originally sufficient to be considered fully vaccinated.

What does this mean for the booster vaccination?

Are the Johnson vaccinated already boosted after the second vaccination or are three injections necessary as with the other vaccines?

The confusion is great.

Mainly because the Booster* status is defined differently in the federal states.

Vaccination with Johnson & Johnson: when did you get boosted in Bavaria?

In federal states such as Baden-Württemberg, Lower Saxony and Rhineland-Palatinate, a second vaccination is sufficient for people who have been vaccinated with Johnson to be considered boosted.

However, it is different in the Free State of Bavaria.

Here, people who have received a Johnson & Johnson* vaccination only have their basic immunization after a second injection.

Consequently, they are only considered boosted when they have rolled up their sleeves a third time.

This means that people in Bavaria who have received a Johnson vaccine are exempt from the 2G rule after a second injection and from the 2G Plus rule only after a third vaccination.

Corona rules in Bavaria: where does 2G-Plus apply?

  • Sporting events (as a spectator)

  • Indoor sports practice (e.g. fitness studios)

  • Cultural events (e.g. theatres, museums, cinemas, concert halls)

  • Trade fairs, conferences, congresses

  • exhibitions, castles

  • Swimming pools, thermal baths, saunas, solariums

  • Other leisure areas (e.g. indoor playgrounds, amusement arcades, betting shops, casinos)

Booster regulation at Johnson & Johnson: Why is Bavaria going its own way?

The Free State based its decision on the permanent vaccination commission (Stiko).

"However, the STIKO still recommends that all people over the age of 18 who have received a first vaccine dose of the COVID-19 Vaccine Janssen optimize their basic immunization with a second vaccine dose with an mRNA vaccine," says a current press release from the Robert Koch- Institute (RKI).

According to the RKI, the second vaccination is not a booster, but an "optimization".

An answer to our request to the Bavarian Ministry of Health is still pending.

Recommendation of the RKI for Johnson & Johnson vaccinated persons

The Robert Koch Institute advises having another vaccine injected four weeks after a J&J vaccination.

Then there is a high level of protection for three months.

After that, however, the effect wears off again and vaccinated people can become infected more easily.

The Stiko advises people who have been vaccinated with J&J to take an mRNA vaccine for the second and third vaccination.

The Biontech vaccine is currently recommended for those under 30 years of age.

Over 30-year-olds can also inject the vaccine from Moderna.

The RKI currently does not recommend further vaccination with an mRNA vaccine or the vector vaccine from Johnson & Johnson for J&J vaccinated people who have been infected with the corona virus.

The new regulation triggers resentment among some Johnson & Johnson vaccinated *.

As recently reported, some feel disadvantaged, misinformed and taken by surprise.
