At the end of December, the fast-food chain had already had to implement this measure in its 2,900 restaurants, due to a shortage of potatoes. The latter, imported, in fact pass through the port of Vancouver in Canada, which experienced difficulties following

“massive flooding”

.

“The disruptions of the pandemic on the global maritime transport network”

are also responsible for the lack that the Archipelago is currently experiencing, explains McDonald's in a press release. The restrictions in force in its restaurants are thus intended to

"ensure that we have sufficient inventory and that our customers can enjoy McDonald's fries without interruption"

, indicates the sign quoted by Asahi.

McDonald's is not the only chain to have to reduce its potato offer.

Other restaurants have, in fact, indicated on Twitter that they have taken the same decision, like the Sagami brand, which explains that,

"to please many customers, sales of large potatoes will be suspended. for about a month from January 17

.

Only

“regular size”

formats will be available for sale.

Import versus local supply

Conversely, the Japanese fast food chain, Freshness Burger, promises more fries. Surfing on the difficulties encountered by its American competitor, it recently launched a communication campaign called

“we have potatoes”

, reports Japan Today.

"We're running a fries boost campaign to satisfy the 'potato gluttony' starting today!"

, could we read on the brand's twitter on January 14, indicating that it was increasing, until February 27, the size of its portions by 25%.

If Freshness Burger can afford such an offer, it is because it does not import its potatoes, unlike McDonald's, JapanToday points out.

It gets its supplies from national producers, thus enabling it not to face the shortage affecting its competitor.
