The niece of Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, an activist against the death penalty, was arrested in Iran, a few months after celebrating the 83rd birthday of the widow of the Shah of Iran, AFP learned from her brother and Iranian activists.

Farideh Moradkhani was arrested on Thursday (January 13th) by security forces, her brother Mahmoud Moradkhani told London-based Iran International TV on Sunday evening.

We are worried... We now know that she is in Evin prison
" in Tehran, under the control of intelligence ministry forces, he said.
Farideh Moradkhani was arrested on her way home and her house was raided, according to Human Rights Activists News Agency (HRANA).
The reasons for his arrest were not known but activists noted that it came a few months after a video in which Farideh Moraskhani greeted Farah Diba, the widow of the shah of Iran overthrown by the Islamic revolution in 1979.

In this video, for Farah Diba's 83rd birthday, the Supreme Leader's niece spoke of a "
dear Queen
" and urged her to return to Iran to work for the rebirth of culture.
Farah Diba, exiled from Iran since the revolution, lives in France.
Farideh Moradkhani is the daughter of Ali Khamenei's sister, Badri, who fled with her family in the 1980s to Iraq.
The Supreme Leader also has three brothers.
