Since December 30, with the Omicron variant declared for the fifth wave, the number of infections has been increasing rapidly again. German Press Agency

: "For me, a fourth vaccination four to six months after the third vaccination would be an adequate measure." However, he also pointed out that due to a lack of data there is still no recommendation from the Standing Vaccination Commission (Stiko) for a fourth vaccination. It is often said that one wants to wait for the adapted Omikron vaccine. "But I'm afraid that will take too long," said Wendtner. New vaccines are not to be expected before April - but the omicron wave is now rolling in. "You have to prepare a four-vaccination campaign now, also based on the availability of the currently approved vaccines. We can't just think about it when it's March or April."

Corona in Bavaria: Holetschek clarifies the new rule

Update from January 15, 3:33 p.m .:

As of today, new quarantine rules apply in Bavaria for certain contact persons of corona infected people.

"Even as contact persons for omicron cases, people who have just been vaccinated (three months), those who have just recovered (three months) and those who have been boosted (unlimited) no longer have to be in quarantine," explained Health Minister Klaus Holetschek (CSU) on Saturday in Munich.

"This means that there are no longer any different regulations for the different virus variants."

Corona in Bavaria: New quarantine rules

Previously, contact persons of a person infected with the omicron variant were quarantined for 14 days without the chance to test free. On Friday, the Federal Council cleared the way for an ordinance that regulates fundamental exceptions to quarantine. Otherwise, the following has applied since last Tuesday: the duration of isolation for infected people and the duration of quarantine for close contacts is usually ten days. A free test with a negative PCR or rapid antigen test is possible after just seven days – although you must be symptom-free for at least 48 hours after an infection.

For employees in clinics and retirement homes, for example, a PCR test is mandatory to end quarantine and isolation, or negative rapid tests must be presented daily for five days.

Pupils as well as daycare and kindergarten children who have to be in quarantine as contact persons can in future be tested after just five days, using a rapid PCR or antigen test.

Corona in Bavaria: Munich statisticians present data on excess mortality

Update from January 15, 2:40 p.m .:

During the fourth corona wave, thousands more people died in Bavaria than usual.

At the end of November and the beginning of December, there were sometimes over 1,000 deaths per week more than the average (median) of the four years before, according to figures from the Federal Statistical Office.

From October, these numbers show a significant increase in deaths per week.

For the period from early November to mid-December, the authority consistently reported deaths that were several hundred higher than the values from the four previous years.

The highest difference was in calendar week 48 with a total of 3699 deaths – 1094 more than the median value.

Corona in Bavaria: Significant excess mortality during the delta wave

According to preliminary figures, a total of 32,041 people died in Bavaria in calendar weeks 40 to 49 – i.e. from October 4 to December 12, 2021. That's a good 6,500 more than the median values for these weeks from previous years. The statistics see a direct connection with Corona in 3269 deaths. Nationwide, the Federal Statistical Office also shows significantly more deaths than the average of previous years. Here the difference is even in the tens of thousands.

Scientists from the Covid-19 data analysis group CODAG at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich have also calculated a significant excess mortality in the delta wave for Bavaria. In a report published on Friday, they come up with weekly excess mortality of up to 30 percent during this period, about half of which, according to the researchers, can be explained by deaths with Covid-19.

The Federal Statistical Office gives the median of the corresponding calendar weeks from 2017 to 2020 as a comparative value for the current number of deaths.

The median is formed from a set of numbers, half of which are higher and the other half lower.

This mean is less sensitive to distortions caused by individual extreme values than the average that is otherwise often used.

For example, given the numbers 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, and 1000, the median would be 5, but the average would be around 115.1.

Fourth corona vaccination: Munich expert does not want to wait for the Omicron vaccine

Update from January 15, 12 p.m.:

The Munich corona expert Clemens Wendtner has called for rapid preparation for the fourth corona vaccination in view of the current development. "For me, a fourth vaccination four to six months after the third vaccination would be an adequate measure," said the chief physician of infectiology at the Munich Clinic Schwabing of the German Press Agency. At the same time, however, he pointed out that due to a lack of data there is still no recommendation from the Standing Vaccination Commission (Stiko) for the fourth vaccination.

It was often said that one wanted to wait for the adapted Omikron vaccine.

"But I'm afraid that will take too long," says Wendtner.

New corona vaccines are not to be expected before April - but the Omicron wave is now rolling in.

"You have to prepare a four-vaccination campaign now, also based on the availability of the currently approved vaccines.

We shouldn't think about it until it's March or April," the expert explained.

For people who received a booster vaccination in late summer, the fourth vaccination is already an issue.

This applies to healthcare workers as well as to people who are particularly at risk, for example in retirement homes.

Sebastian Ulbert, vaccine researcher from the Fraunhofer Institute for Cell Therapy and Immunology, wants to distinguish between "immune-healthy" and "immune-weak" people when it comes to the question of a fourth vaccination.

For him, a fourth vaccination is not initially an option for everyone, but primarily for older people and risk groups, as in Israel.
