Opinion | The breakup: The Bennett-Lapid government is limping towards its end Israel today

2022-01-17T21:06:24.955Z

With the emerging crystallization of the plea deal for Netanyahu, the coalition and the opposition are smelling the weakness of the government and preparing to leap on prey.

"There is no reason for the government to fall apart," Naftali Bennett told ministers on Sunday.

"The current government can continue because it is doing good things," Yair Lapid said yesterday.

Things in a similar spirit were also said by Merav Michaeli and Nitzan Horowitz.

But the government is already falling apart.

Yesterday they failed to pass the draft law due to a rebellion by a coalition member.

On Tuesday, the Ministerial Committee passed a citizenship law of the opposition, and Lapid filed an appeal that stuck the legislation.

The right in government is sitting and restrained, but apparently his patience will soon run out as well.

This will happen very quickly, to the extent that Netanyahu does sign the plea deal, as is estimated in the political system.

The changes may be faster and more dramatic than expected.

In Torah Judaism, there are already those who think about the day after Netanyahu.

For him, there is no reason to wait until the Likud elects its next leader, and then wish that, like Netanyahu, he would take them with him to the coalition or elections.

If the feeling is that the Likud will not be committed to them - they will prefer to go ahead and not be committed to the Likud.

This means striving to enter the government in the current Knesset.

But it is not only in Torah Judaism that they will feel the change.

Also in the right-wing parties in the coalition.

Although Naftali Bennett will not want to give up his position so easily, other right-wing elements, if they have any intentions of belonging to the camp they came from, will no longer be able to explain why a right-wing government is not formed when there is a right-wing majority in the Knesset.

After all, when the government was formed, they explained that this was a "no choice" government, whose entire purpose was to prevent further elections, and that their preference had always been and always will be a right-wing government.

Their only explanation for the denial of such a government was, as stated, the disqualification of Netanyahu.

The Likud may also be restless.

The party without Netanyahu will not be united as it was.

This can be expressed in camping, as it was in the days of Arik Sharon and David Levy.

And it can also lead to a more extreme scenario, of a real split into two different parties.

However, those who are most likely to overthrow the government will actually be members of the left in the coalition.

Already today, members of Meretz, Labor and Ra'am are doing justice to themselves, in various votes contrary to the coalition's position.

When smelling elections or a coalition change, the parties begin to climb on barricades.

Everyone must be different from everyone else, get out of a joint work mode and get into a campaign mode.

This is the most dangerous situation for the well-being of any government, especially in the current government.
