The latest developments in the treatment of breast tumors were reviewed and discussed by the participants in the scientific symposium organized today by Al-Biruni University Hospital, which specializes in treating tumors, under the title “Breast Cancer: New Horizons.”

In a speech during the symposium, the Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, Dr. Bassam Ibrahim, drew attention to the importance of exchanging experiences and keeping pace with scientific development through research papers and recommendations that were presented, referring to the role of Al-Biruni Hospital in this field, as it provides various diagnostic and treatment services to patients free of charge.

Minister Ibrahim indicated that Al-Biruni Hospital provided more than 57 thousand chemotherapy operations and more than 150 radiotherapy operations during the past year, and more than 1900 cases of breast cancer were accepted, and the number of surgeries for this type of tumor exceeded 600 operations.

For his part, the President of Damascus University, Dr. Muhammad Osama Al-Jabban, drew attention to the need to follow up on scientific research and treatment developments in various medical fields, including breast cancer, as it is one of the most common cancers among women in the world, stressing the university’s keenness to conduct and support qualitative research and studies and encourage researchers from specialists and students to publish them. Specialized local and international magazines.

In turn, Dr. Ihab Al-Naqari, Director General of Al-Biruni Hospital, pointed out that the hospital, in addition to its role in providing medical services, following up on scientific developments, and applying them, is a reference for treating tumors surgically, chemically, radiologically and biologically, including breast cancer cases, which constitute between 30 to 35 percent of the cases that are reviewed in the hospital.

Dr. Muhammad Al-Awak, Head of the Breast Cancer Division in the hospital, spoke in his lecture about the new indications for immunotherapy and modern immunomodulatory drugs that are used as the first line in the treatment of transitional breast cancer instead of traditional chemotherapy, revealing that these drugs have been registered with the Ministry of Health and will soon be used within the hospitals of the Ministries of Health and Education Higher education and scientific research that provides services to cancer patients.

For his part, Dr. Maan Al-Aysami, a faculty member at the Faculty of Human Medicine and Head of the Plastic and Reconstructive Department at Al-Mowasat University Hospital, pointed out in his lecture the development of methods of restoration of breast cancer surgery and the role of the multidisciplinary team in the breast diseases unit in the hospital in treating some cases and giving the best results with treatment and improving the condition of patients.

Dr. Maha Manashi, a member of the National Committee for Cancer Control, indicated that breast cancer accounts for 35 to 40 percent of tumor cases locally, which needs further follow-up to study the causes and provide treatment services that reduce mortality rates and increase recovery rates.

For his part, Dr. Maher Seifou, Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Medicine at Damascus University for Scientific Affairs and an oncologist at Al-Biruni Hospital, pointed out the importance of keeping pace with scientific developments in rationalizing the treatment of breast tumors. Al-Biruni is currently applied in cases of early detection, which has yielded qualitative results.
