Cold wind, gray sky, minus three degrees.

Some Munich residents felt it was too cold to go out on Saturday – but not the volunteers at the Münchner Tafel food bank.

Munich - Brotzeit is the name of the new campaign that will take place every Saturday from now on at Sankt-Anna-Platz in Lehel.

Bread left over from the food distribution in the morning is distributed here.

The special feature: Everyone is served.

Otherwise you can only get groceries from the distribution points if you can show an entitlement certificate.

And only those who demonstrably live below the subsistence level get it.

That is 449 euros for a single adult per month.

The problem: Many people earn more, but still not enough to live in expensive Munich.

Many also do not want help because they are ashamed.

Munich: Tafel wants to help against “hidden poverty”

"Hidden poverty" is what Axel Schweiger, CEO of the Munich Food Bank, calls it.

The 64-year-old calculates that this fate applies to almost half of the estimated 260,000 people in need in Munich.

Exactly she wants to support the food bank with her new offer.

But the helpers also want to be a point of contact and a social hub for those in need.

An important project, because food prices rose by around 4.5 percent in Germany in December alone.

The pandemic and its consequences have brought people in need from completely new groups to the Tafel: freelancers, short-time workers, but also older people or students who have lost their mini-jobs.

The destinies are manifold, the suffering enormous.

"We at the Tafel can only help 222,000 needy people," regrets Axel Schweiger.
