The rabbi at a synagogue in the city of Cullivil, Texas, who was among the four hostages held at the scene, said today (Monday) that he threw a chair at the kidnapper before fleeing the compound.
Charlie Citron-Walker said the kidnapper became more threatening and violent towards the end of his fortification.
He said the safety training the community members have received in recent years has helped them survive the incident.
In a statement, the rabbi said that without training, "we were not prepared to act and flee when necessary."
