Parts of the United States and Canada were covered in snow and ice following a major winter storm, and about 80 million people are subject to weather warnings.

More than 3,000 flights were canceled yesterday (Sunday) across the United States and more than 145,000 people were left without electricity in some southeastern countries.



In Virginia, Georgia and South and North Carolina a state of emergency has been declared, and the U.S. National Weather Service said up to 30 inches of snow is expected to fall in some areas. The service warned that frost could cause dangerous travel, power outages and tree damage In some places, where New York has been warned of flooding in coastal areas.

South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster has urged residents to refrain from traveling.

"This is going to be a pretty bad storm in the upper part of the country," he said.

He added that the "good news" is that the storm has come in recent days, which included the weekend and a public day off, so fewer people are on the roads.

Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp said "I hope the storm is less strong than forecast, but it could be more, we just do not know."



In Canada, the province of Ontario, which borders New York State, yesterday issued weather warnings for most of its southern part.

According to the forecast, up to 20 cm of snow may fall in Toronto, the capital of the province and the largest city in Canada.
