Hammersbach/Offenbach – Two people died in a fire at a motorway service station with a gas station near Hammersbach in Hesse on Monday.
The exact course of events and the possible background to the incident on the A45 still have to be determined, the police said in Offenbach in the afternoon.
Accordingly, a witness had reported a small explosion, a little later there was a fire in the area of the gas pumps.
"In addition to the gas station, the adjacent restaurant was also affected," it said.
The fire brigade quickly brought the fire under control.
According to initial findings by the police, two vehicles were apparently affected by the incident at the Langen-Bergheim service area (towards Gießen).
The cars are said to have been in the gas station area.
They were badly damaged.
A dead person was found in one of the cars, the second in the immediate vicinity.
The criminal police and the public prosecutor's office took over the investigation on site.
An expert was also called in.
A team from the Langenselbold Autobahn Police used a drone to take aerial photographs of the area, which are to be included in the investigation.
