A winter storm has caused power outages and traffic delays in the eastern United States.

The US Weather Service warned of heavy snowfall, rain and strong gusts of wind on Sunday.

According to the website poweroutage.us, around 235,000 households have already lost power.

Around 2,900 flights had to be canceled by Sunday afternoon, as reported by the Flightaware online service.

The states of Georgia, Virginia and North Carolina declared states of emergency.

Drivers in the eastern United States have been warned of dangerous road conditions.

The storm was expected to cause flooding on the east coast.

The weather service warned that the wind on the Atlantic coast could almost reach hurricane strength on Monday night.

A heavy snowstorm had already swept across the US east coast in early January and had partially paralyzed public life in the affected regions.
