Algeria under the yoke of Vichy, on Arte

In Oran and Algiers, along the boulevards, black and white lemonadiers serve anisettes on the terrace.

For more than a century, Algeria has been French.

But we are in June 1940, and France is now half German.

The repercussions are soon felt on the other side of the Mediterranean.

Stéphane Benhamou's documentary,

tries to show it, the anti-Jewish Vichy measures applied will be even more severe than in France.

Less fatal, because there was no deportation, but more severe.

This beautifully crafted film is partly based on Jacques Attali's book

(Fayard).

Indigenous Inequalities

With berets on their heads and gloomy faces, the members of the French Legion of Combatants parade under the palm trees.

Pétain's speech found a particularly favorable echo in Algeria.

It promises to preserve the luster of the vast colonial empire and the inequalities with regard to the natives.
