She wants to give everything at the Olympics

Kira Weidle from Skiclub Starnberg has big plans for the upcoming competitions

Starnberg - "It was a fantastic weekend and I'm very happy with the result and how I skied." Skiing ace Kira Weidle from Skiclub Starnberg was only a tenth of a second behind winner Lara Gut-Behrami at the World Cup race in Zauchensee on Saturday Switzerland and is now aiming for a medal at the Olympic Winter Games in Beijing.

In an interview with Kreisbote Starnberg

, she revealed what she hopes to gain from the

upcoming competition in China and what role her home on Lake Starnberg will play for her.

Best World Cup result so far

With second place, Kira Weidle was able to achieve her best World Cup result so far in the downhill on Saturday.

"It makes me very proud," she says.

In the end, she was able to do what she set out to do.

"It gives me a lot of self-confidence." She is also satisfied with her result in the Super G on Saturday: "It was a solid ride and I can see that I'm making progress there.

Now it's off to Cortina d'Ampezzo, of course I have great memories of my silver medal at the World Ski Championships last year with the route there”.

Of course, the athlete would like to build on her good performances from the weekend there and win her first World Cup this year.

"Ever since I started ski racing, my big dream has been to win a World Cup race and be on the top of the podium."

Simulate the Olympic course during training

But that's not the athlete's only immediate goal.

"Now the Olympics are just around the corner, winning a medal there is of course the dream of every athlete and I'm really looking forward to representing my country there," she says to the district

messenger

.

Not being able to train on the race track in advance is "not ideal" this time, "nevertheless we try to simulate different parts of the Olympic track in training".

Of course, that's not the same as training on the right track.

Nevertheless, Kira Weidle wants to continue working on her technique before leaving for China in order to be well prepared for the demanding passages.

Keep your fingers crossed in the Super G on February 11th and in the Downhill on February 15th.

"Due to the time difference, the fans unfortunately have to get up very early," says the Starnberg ski club athlete.

Because the corresponding Olympic competitions are broadcast on television at night.

But Kira Weidle wants to compensate her supporters for the nightly excitement.

"I do my best to reward the fans with good performances."

Because of Corona, the athletes have to do without a lot

But before that, you have to train hard.

Kira Weidle explains to the district messenger

how much the pandemic is affecting the preparations for the individual competitions and changing the training process

.

“Corona affects many parts of our work and our sport.

We have to do without a lot, but we are very happy that there are great concepts everywhere that allow us to practice our sport.

“I miss the fans the most”

The athletes taking part in the Winter Olympics do not have any influence on the test and quarantine regulations, "but of course we follow them carefully," she says.

“What I miss the most is the fans.

Feeling the support of the fans every race is a very nice feeling and I hope we can all see each other back to normal at the track soon.”

When asked about the political situation in China, the athlete takes a stance.

“I cannot represent and endorse many of the values and views that are lived in China.

Of course it's a strange feeling to travel to a country where human rights are not always respected.” But when she's there, the 25-year-old wants to concentrate fully on her sport.

“I will block out everything else to be fully focused.

We will appear united as 'Team Germany' and proudly represent our country."

Kira Weidle is looking forward to her two races at the Olympics the most

In Beijing, Kira Weidle lives in the Olympic Village.

"Due to Corona, we live in a bubble so as not to provoke infections," she explains.

The team of trainers and supervisors will travel to China with her, and she guarantees that everyone will prepare as well as possible for the races.

“Of course I'm looking forward to my two races the most.

It makes me very proud to represent my country there.

In addition, I try to simply enjoy the time and soak up as much of the Olympic spirit as possible.” Kira Weidle is also looking forward to the many experiences she can gain at the world's largest sporting event.

After a strenuous race at Lake Starnberg

When asked about the ski club and her home town of Starnberg, Kira Weidle expresses her gratitude.

The club is their “skiing home”.

“I am very grateful to the ski club for the opportunities they have given me over many years to pursue my dream of competing in World Cup races.

Lake Starnberg is "one of my favorite places to wind down after strenuous races or trips and to reconcile body and mind," says the athlete.

“I love the speed and the adrenaline”

When asked if she always wanted to be a ski racer, she recalls when she was young skiing with her father.

"I knew that this is the sport I would like to do professionally later on.

I love the speed and adrenaline during races and I'm very grateful and proud of how far I've come.

But I still have some goals and I will do everything to achieve them in the future.
