Diplomatic baptism of fire for Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock with her Russian colleague Sergei Lavrov.
Relations between Berlin and Moscow are at a low point, mainly due to the Ukraine conflict.
And just like on Monday in Kiev, Baerbock again sent clear words to the Kremlin.
Annalena Baerbock, Foreign Minister
"In the last week, 100,000 Russian soldiers have gathered near the Ukrainian border for no apparent reason, and it's hard not to see that as a threat."
Baerbock spoke to Lavrov for over two hours longer than planned and wants to bring both parties to the conflict back to the negotiating table together with France.
The Russian foreign minister made it clear that it was untenable for him to portray Russia as a warring party in Ukraine.
He was concerned about NATO's course.
Baerbock warned that fundamental values in Europe should be observed - the controversial Nord Stream 2 pipeline was also discussed.
Annalena Baerbock, Foreign Minister
"At the same time, we have repeatedly affirmed at different levels of this federal government that if energy were to be used as a weapon, that would also have a corresponding impact on this pipeline."
Before meeting the Russian foreign minister, Baerbock laid a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Moscow and later warned that all countries must protect their citizens from war and violence.
