End for the first paper certificates: There is a great rush at the driver's license authority in Ebersberg.

Because for some driver's license holders the deadline is now up.

Ebersberg – There is a lot to do at the Ebersberg driving license office. Team leader Josef Köll and his colleagues are working at full speed, the next available appointments will not be available until the beginning of March. Reason for this: From January 19th, all paper driving licenses from the years 1953 to 1958 will be invalid. According to Köll, this affects exactly 6,040 people in the Ebersberg district: "There were almost 2,000 of them by the turn of the year, the other 4,000 are currently on the mat with us."

Although all of these tickets say "valid indefinitely", the EU law passed in 2019 is now being implemented through the exchange of driving licenses: a new plastic card is intended to help protect against counterfeiting every 15 years, says Köll.

In addition, the new driver's licenses look the same across the EU, making it easier to recognize and read them internationally.

According to Köll, many people do not even know that the paper driving license that is still valid in Germany is no longer accepted in most other EU countries.

"In Spain, for example, you can no longer rent a vehicle with an old German driver's license," says the director.

In the worst case, a fine could even be due.

Around 40 new driver's licenses a day: the driver's license office in Ebersberg is working at full speed

Anyone wishing to exchange their driver's license must bring a valid ID, a biometric photo not older than one year, and their previous driver's license to the appointment. The new one costs 25.30 euros and, according to Kölle, can currently be picked up after about three weeks. Until then, the old, invalidated driver's license and receipt count as a driver's license. The expiry date in Germany has been known since 2019, but: "Many also admit that they simply have not taken care of it before," says Köll's experience. Others would simply have overlooked it.

The driver's license office processes around 840 appointments this month.

On average, that's about 40 driver's licenses a day.

About a quarter of these are first-time permits, the rest to exchange the old driver's license, according to the manager.

According to Köll, the district council approved at least one of the two required extra positions.

Expired deadline: Old driver's licenses will not be punished until June

But younger generations are already looking for the way to the driver's license office: Because the papers from the years 1959 to 1964 are only valid until January 19, 2023.

By 2033, all paper driver's licenses will eventually have been replaced.

"At the same time, the first driver's licenses that were issued for a limited period of time will expire, which means that this driver's license exchange will continue to accompany us after the mandatory exchange campaign," says the manager.

But don't worry for those whose deadline is about to expire: "The police have been instructed not to punish this by June 30," says Köll.

Due to the current rush, he asks: "Those who haven't turned up yet, please don't come here now."
