The European Parliament today elected Maltese MP Roberta Metsola as its president by an absolute majority, becoming the third woman to hold this position for two and a half years, after French women, Simone and Nicole Fontaine.
The Associated Press reported that Mitsola, who was a candidate for the largest group in parliament, won an absolute majority in the first round of voting, winning 458 votes out of 616 today.
Mezzola succeeded Italian social democrat David Sassoli, who died last week in hospital and who was due to end his term as parliament this week.
Mitsula has served as acting president since January 11, when Sassoli died.
