Corona also caused a lot of negative headlines in Munich.

But now there is good news: Bavaria's state capital has set a new blood record.

Munich – Despite the pandemic, 2021 was an absolute lucky year for many Munich residents – because they became parents!

Fact: Last year there was a birth record.

24,089 Munich Kindl were born in 2021 - more than ever before in one year.

As the Munich Clinic announced on Monday (January 17), 6,740 babies were born in the three city women's clinics alone - in Harlaching 2,528, in Schwabing 2,793 and in Neuperlach 1,419. In the birth rate comparison to the previous year, that was an increase of 3.84 percent (nationwide it was plus 2.66 percent).

A baby boom in times of a pandemic – how did Corona affect births?

According to the city clinics, a total of 62 corona-positive women gave birth here in 2021 - 25 in Schwabing, 22 in Harlaching and 15 in Neuperlach.

In 2020 there were 27 such cases at the three locations.

Munich: Birth record despite the risk of corona – “We were able to minimize risks”

Luckily, the Munich clinic has a safety concept that enables "unrestricted obstetrics". In this way, the presence of the partner could be guaranteed in all phases of the birth. "We were able to minimize risks and didn't lose a single mother," say the chief physicians of the women's clinics, Prof. Christoph Scholz and Dr. Olaf Neumann. “At the same time, we looked after highly complex pregnancies with the usual quality and also helped the weakest into the world. We are incredibly proud of that.”

All doctors emphasize at the same time: "It is important that women go into pregnancy already vaccinated and now refresh their vaccination protection with a view to Omikron." The corona vaccination is not a risk for the expectant mother and the child, but rather "the best possible protection “.
