The Secretary of Security and Citizen Protection of Tijuana confirmed on Monday the death of Mexican photojournalist Alfonso Margarito Martínez Esquivel, who reported police and security issues in that city for the weekly Zeta and other local media.

Zeta reported in a note that the 49-year-old photojournalist had spots and a head injury from a firearm projectile.

The Secretary of Security confirmed to CNN that they received a report from the radio station after noon, according to which there had been an attack with a firearm against a man in the Camino Verde neighborhood.

The mayor of Tijuana, Montserrat Caballero, lamented the death of the photojournalist through a message that she posted on the official account of the city council on Facebook.

  • Violence in Mexico does not give truce, did the strategy of hugs fail, not bullets?

This is what the experts say

"We join the sorrow that overwhelms his family and friends, waiting for his prompt resignation," reads the message.

In parallel, the Baja California State Human Rights Commission called on the authorities to clarify the facts related to Martínez's death.

The head of that Commission, Miguel Mora, said in a statement that it is imperative that an expeditious process be carried out in the case, "since any attack on journalists constitutes an attack on freedom of expression and the right of society to be informed." .
