Unterallgäu – Omikron is on the rise throughout Germany and has now also replaced it as the predominant corona variant in the Unterallgäu Delta.

The health department confirmed this on Monday.

1,273 Unterallgäuers were in isolation on Monday, the majority due to omicron. The health department says: “The omicron variant is very contagious and spreads quickly. This can also be seen in the 7-day incidence, which has risen from 318.8 to 552.8 in the Lower Allgäu over the past seven days. We expect significantly higher case numbers, comparable to the numbers in northern Germany with incidences of over 1,000 and more.”

Because of the high numbers, it is currently no longer possible for the health department to personally contact everyone who has tested positive by telephone.

Some of these only receive an email or an SMS from the health department to confirm the positive test.

"The situation will not ease for the health department simply because of the expected very high number of cases, but will continue to worsen," said a spokeswoman for the district office.

But the good news: According to the health department, the situation in the hospitals is more relaxed than in the last wave at the beginning of December, when patients from the region had to be transferred to other clinics in Germany.

In Mindelheim, there were seven corona patients in the clinic at the beginning of the week, none of them in the intensive care unit.

Ottobeuren is currently not hosting any corona patients.
