Opinion | We are here, they are there: who counts the public? | Israel today

If the deal is signed in the Netanyahu affair, we will not know which of all the accusations and actions behind the scenes was true, and which - only part of a false campaign • These are things that interest the least influential people in Israel - the citizens

Signed or not signed, disgraceful or disgraceful, justified or not, one thing is certain when it comes to the plea agreement reached with Benjamin Netanyahu: Whoever will be in the losing column in a trial that will not reach its natural end will be the public.

And this is about the whole public. Those who dislike the opposition chairman and see it as a concern of corruption and sabotage, and those who are willing to fight for his innocence and read with a hoarse throat and shining eyes that the indictment against him is the result of negligent and criminal stitching. Ironically everyone travels the same ship, In them.

And this is not new. The status of citizens and the influence of the conduct of the decision-makers on whom they have suffered for many years from a creeping depletion.

The "public interest" and the importance of exposing omissions and decay to sunlight, so that they can be repaired, are nothing more than meaningless slogans.

The years in which the country was caught up in political dizziness, polarization and stormy and toxic demonstrations were not really in a struggle to clean stables, but in a struggle between opposing forces only for the sake of control and power.

No one planned to interrogate, check and decide, but only to defeat his opponent.

Ultimately, like the contacts for the deal, moves related to the trial are also being conducted over the heads of the citizens.

They are not part of the game, but an unnecessary background noise that does not need to be considered.

This is also the reason why the Israeli prime minister is currently a man who enjoys ridiculous support at the polls, that judges have taken the liberty to intervene even in the most sensitive basic laws, that corona treatment since the outbreak has been tainted by image and publicity considerations, weekly.

Voters and residents of the country in general are not part of the equation. Not in Netanyahu's cases, not in legislation, not in the judiciary or in the House of Representatives, not in emergencies and not in routine times. The disconnect between First Israel, which holds official positions, and Second Israel, which is made up of all citizens, regardless of religion, color or gender, has become absolute and total. There is no meaning to the note that is thrown at the ballot box, there is no meaning to the economic burden placed on their shoulders, and there is no meaning to the obligation to provide them with explanations of controversial decisions. They are there to serve and maintain the authorities, and not the other way around. The result is, of course, an accelerated collapse of public trust in state institutions, and even this collapse will not disturb those who sit in those institutions, ostensibly for the same public.

The Netanyahu trial is no longer a trial.

Beyond the charges in question, endless accusations were thrown into the air about plots to disrupt Israeli democracy and dark behind-the-scenes actions.

If the deal is signed, we will not know the answer to the question of which of these is real, and which was only part of a false journey.

But these are things that interest the least influential people in Israel - the citizens.
