The evangelical church in Walchensee will have to be renovated - the costs for this are over 100,000 euros.

Walchensee – The evangelical church in Walchensee is crumbling in every nook and cranny.

There are cracks in the masonry, the tower leans to one side.

A woodpecker punctured the shingle roof.

However, the renovation is scheduled to start this year.

According to experts, it will cost over 100,000 euros.

It is to be financed by a subsidy from the regional church and a fundraising campaign.

"It is important for the identity of the village," says parishioner Andreas Schulze. © Star

The idea of building a Protestant church in Walchensee came up shortly after the Second World War. At that time, many displaced people from Bohemia and Silesia came to the place, mostly Protestants. At that time, Walchensee was bigger than ever before and then in its history, says Andreas Schulze, supervisor of the crib exhibition in the small church. The people would have erected the building with the simplest of means. "The older people tell that they have witnessed how the children of the refugees brought boulders from the Deiningbach with handcarts." The foundation stone for the building was laid in 1947, on October 23, 1949 Bishop Meiser inaugurated the simple building . Its shape is reminiscent of a ship or the ark, says Pastor Elke Binder: "You feel safe in it."

Space for 60 people in the church

But the building is getting old. The neighboring slope causes static problems. "It is assumed that the subsoil on which the church is founded with rubble stones is slowly but steadily sinking down the slope," says the restoration concept. The aisle and tower have been separated from the main nave for many years. The cracks have been observed for a long time. According to Binder, the preparatory work is currently underway. A soil survey showed that there shouldn't be any problems. Next up are the geotechnical calculations. Then offers should be obtained. Binder: "I hope that we can start the renovation this year." A number of donations have already been received. There are also 5,000 euros from the Sparkassenstiftung and 1,000 euros from the Dorst-Löcherer Foundation. The Kochler municipal council approved a EUR 3,000 subsidy at the most recent meeting.

The evangelical parish of Walchensee is an offshoot of the Kochler parish.

Almost 100 believers belong to it.

The church can seat up to 60 people.

Binder says that it is particularly popular with holiday guests and people with a second home.

Baptisms often take place there.

Schulze adds: "The building bears witness to the more recent history of Walchensee.

It is important for the identity of the town.”
