The police tracked Israelis using NSO software, which was remotely implanted in telephones - it was reported today (Tuesday) in Calcalist.

The software took over the phones of protesters, employees of a government company, opponents of the Pride Parade and even mayors and close associates of a senior politician, listened to their phone calls and watched their correspondence.

According to the publication, the follow-up order was given by high-ranking police officers, without a court order or the supervision of a judge.

The people who carried out the surveillance were members of the special color team in the cyber division "Signet".

The follow-up was conducted, among other things, to find evidence of crimes that citizens were suspected of committing or involved in, or to find information that would help put pressure on interrogees.

In one case, the police broke into the phone of an incumbent mayor - where they found correspondence that raised a suspicion of a give-and-take relationship between him and a contractor.

The case has not progressed beyond the information held by the police, and according to the publication it is not known if the mayor knows that his correspondence has been revealed.

Following the assassination of Shira Banki at the Pride Parade in Jerusalem in the summer of 2015, the police hung the software on the phones of some of the Pride Parade opponents who had been "pre-marked" in order to gather information about them.

Police: There is no basis for the allegations

Police denied the allegations, saying "they have no dawn."

"All police activity in this area is in accordance with the law, on the basis of court orders and strict work procedures," they said.

We regret the attempt to cause damage to the police activity without any basis, "they added.
