Salvamento Marítimo has rescued this Tuesday a boat 44 kilometers from the Canary Island of Fuerteventura that at the time of being intercepted was transporting 62 people: 43 men, 17 women, an eight-year-old girl and a newborn whose birth occurred during the crossing

The migrants had contacted by phone to facilitate their position, which made it easier for the Sasemar 102

Maritime Rescue plane to locate them

, according to sources from the rescue teams,

Later, the

Salvamar Mízar

reached the boat and took the occupants on board, as reported by the same sources.

Initially, the possibility of evacuating the mother and child to the Doctor Negrín Hospital in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria was considered.

The good condition of both, however, made the operation unnecessary and both embarked on the Salvamar along with the rest of their companions on the journey.

It is expected to arrive in Gran Tarajal around 5:30 p.m. local time.

During this Tuesday, in addition, a boat with 56 sub-Saharan migrants arrived at the Arrecife Pier in Lanzarote, of which 11 are women and one of them is pregnant, as reported by the 112 emergency service. The pregnant woman was taken to the hospital for assessment.

The rest were in good health.

The Canary Islands have been suffering in recent days from episodes of strong waves and a strong haze, which makes navigation and visibility difficult.

The Saharan wind suffered in recent days is similar to that reported in February 2020, when all records were broken, according to the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet).

Penalty for five patrons

The Court of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, on the other hand, has sentenced this Tuesday to five and a half years in prison three Malian citizens accused of being the skippers of a canoe rescued in the south of Gran Canaria in November 2020, in which two of its 47 occupants died.

The three defendants, who had been in preventive detention since December 2020, have been sentenced to three years and six months for a crime against the rights of foreign citizens and one year for reckless homicide for each of the two deceased.

The hearing took place in the second section of the Provincial Court and lasted just five minutes, as the defendants acknowledged the facts, accepted the proposed sentences and apologized for the damage caused.
