The natural wild garden of Volkmar Leibls, an action against light pollution and a plastic sponsor are also considered.

For this purpose, founder Peter von Schall-Riaucour increased the prize money to 6000 euros.

Planegg

– The municipality had an environmental prize before: endowed with 500 euros, it was awarded four times between 1996 and 2009 and then discontinued due to a lack of applicants.

Peter von Schall-Riaucour, municipal councilor for Pro Planegg & Martinsried, organized a new edition last year and awarded 5,000 euros to the winner.

Applicants had until mid-October to submit their documents.

Eight projects were registered.

"That was a good start, but there's room for improvement," said von Schall-Riaucour.

Evaluate every idea in terms of sustainability

The ten-member jury, chaired by the founder, spent two hours discussing the projects in the Kupferhaus. According to von Schall-Riaucour, the expertise of Richard Richter, head of the Planegger environmental agency, was particularly helpful, "who evaluated every idea regarding sustainability for nature and the environment from the perspective of a biologist". Because several applications were convincing, von Schall-Riaucour spontaneously decided to "increase the prize money in order to be able to honor places two to four as well".

The first prize, endowed with 5000 euros, goes to the school garden of the Feodor-Lynen-Gymnasium.

After many years of neglect, biology teacher Judith Voit revived it in 2018.

The reactivation of amphibian spawning waters such as the tadpole pond was the focus of the application.

"The regeneration of small biotopes by students active in the school garden has led to a significant improvement in the habitat for our native amphibians and also enables students to understand an ecosystem through direct observation and subsequently to protect it," says the Jury.

Natural overgrown garden

Volkmar Leibl, who deliberately lets his garden in the Hofmarkstraße become natural, receives 500 euros. "The last time I mowed the lawn was seven years ago," says Leibl. For years he planted and tried. Meanwhile, the roses, oregano, evening primroses and mulleins are growing. There are apple trees, mostly old varieties, wild plums, a nashi tree and a fig tree. The jury praised the unsealing of areas, the absence of any chemicals and the variety of structures with sunny and shady, dry and humid areas. Leibl also leaves deadwood as an important habitat. "The garden is most beautiful at dusk, in the morning and in the evening," says Leibl. "This twilight is good for the soul."

The jury awarded third prize and 300 euros to the "Sine Lux" campaign, which means "without light". The three 12th graders of the FLG Fabian Zimmermann, Joachim von Wulffen and Berenike Braun dealt with electricity consumption and light pollution last autumn. They wrote inflo flyers, which they hung up in Planegg and Martinsried and which contained two QR codes: one led to a short online survey, the other to information about the topic. 60 people took part in the survey by mid-October. The jury particularly liked the initiative.

Beatrix Dinkelmaier, who joined the Würmtal plastic sponsors around a year ago, came fourth, which is worth 200 euros.

It regularly removes plastic waste from a specific area in the Grund.

"My belief is that waste does not belong in the landscape," she says.

And: "I think it's good that there is such an environmental award."
