A scent of the Cold War has been floating over the Baltic Sea in recent days.
To respond to a massive and unusual presence of the Russian navy off its coast, Sweden this weekend deployed an emergency force on the island of Gotland, its outpost facing the former Soviet bloc.
In Visby, the capital of Gotland, the muffled inhabitants who crowd between the ramparts and the medieval churches must now share the roadway with armored vehicles and armed soldiers.
"The risk of war is low, and I sleep well at night
," reassured Colonel Mattias Ardin, commander of the P 18 regiment. Still, these noises of boots are beginning to worry the Swedes.
