STRASBOURG -
The first vote has begun for the new president of the European Parliament in Strasbourg.
The vote, due to the resurgence of Covid infections, takes place
in hybrid, partly in the Chamber and partly remotely.
There are three candidates:
Roberta Metsola of the Ppe, Alice Bah Kuhnke of the Greens and Sira Rigo of Gue.
In the first ballot - and in the next two - to be elected you need to get 50% of the valid votes plus one.
Therefore, neither the blank ballots nor the votes considered invalid are counted in the count.
The results of the first vote will be announced at 11 am.
The
candidate of the group of conservatives and reformists
for the presidency of the European Parliament, the Polish Kosma Zlotowski,
has withdrawn from the race
for the presidency. Sources in the European Parliament make it known. According to what is learned from sources in the Ecr group,
the Conservatives and Reformists
are oriented to vote for the
EPP candidate Roberta Metsola
for the presidency of the EU Parliament. The two main parties of the group are the FDI and the PIS Poles.
"David wanted to put everyone around the same table, a commitment that I want to continue to pursue"
.
This was declared
by Roberta Metsola, starting her speech as a candidate for the presidency of the European Parliament
at the Plenary in Strasbourg.
"I want to strengthen the culture of debate", continues Metsola, "politics cannot be a battle between winners and losers, but must be at the service of citizens".
