The Department of Surgical Operations at Al-Basel Hospital in Karm Al-Lawz in Homs provides about 4000 free minor and major surgeries annually to patients, and is unique in the field of neurological and orthopedic surgeries in Syria.

Dr. Ahmed Balloul, the hospital director, explained in a statement to SANA reporter that a special floor has been allocated within the hospital, consisting of 5 operating rooms equipped with the latest devices, equipment and surgical tools, in addition to an emergency room and trained medical and nursing staff to meet the increasing pressure on the hospital, which provides its services to about 600 patients daily, indicating that The hospital services exceeded 800,000 free health services during the past year.

Balloul explained that the Surgical Operations Department has performed thousands of orthopedic, neurological, general, urinary, maxillary and obstetric surgeries since its establishment over the past 9 years, indicating that preparations are currently being made to open a special surgical care room concerned with resuscitating patients after they leave the operating room, and that the emergency care department in the hospital has recently been expanded to include 11 beds equipped with all medical equipment, including monitors, competitors and trauma devices, to provide comprehensive and continuous care for patients with critical or unstable conditions.

Dr. Aktham Al-Naqari, Head of the Neurosurgery Department at the hospital, indicated that 90% of the neurosurgical tools and devices were available, and this in turn helped in performing major qualitative operations that the department provided for free, such as excision of brain tumors, disc operations, fixation of vertebrae, delicate and rare nerve operations, and emergency operations for fractures and hemorrhages as a result of traffic accidents. Pointing to the high cost of some operations, which exceed millions of pounds in private hospitals, while the department provides them for free.

Dr. Sabah Sheno, head of the orthopedic department at the hospital, pointed out to the great and increasing pressure on the department, which patients flock to from several governorates as a result of the complex and diverse operations that it performs, starting with the installation of joints and passing through pelvic fractures, vertebrae fractures and other emergency operations that require rapid intervention and special equipment such as work tables. Surgical, CR device and arch device for major orthopedic operations, indicating that the majority of operations are performed in an advanced endoscopic manner without wounds.

Anesthesiologist Dr. Yahya Al-Shamali confirmed that all operations are carried out on time despite the circumstances and the unjust economic siege on Syria, which has negatively affected all sectors, including the health sector, pointing out that most of the cotton and full anesthetics needed for surgical operations are available, and that the anesthesia department is composed of 5 doctors and 30 technicians. The second begins with accompanying the patient during and after surgery and following up on his condition until he is discharged.


Malik Al-Nasif, the husband of the patient, Noor Al-Taweel, 25, indicated that his wife suffered for 4 months from pain, headache, loss of consciousness and convulsions. Doctors opinion.

Al-Nassif confirmed that the surgery for his wife was performed free of charge, knowing that its cost exceeds 6 million pounds in private hospitals, which exceeds his financial capacity, and she is currently recovering thanks to the follow-up and attention of doctors and nursing staff, and the provision of all her treatment supplies around the clock.
