"Palm Life - Hong Kong Hamster Concern Society" posted a post on its Facebook page last night, stating that in just a few hours after the news was announced, it had received no less than 20 inquiries about abandonment arrangements.

Hygiene, the possibility of infection of the mice in the home is very small."

Regarding the decision to order the mass culling of hamsters, Yuan Guoyong, an expert advisor to the government and a chair professor of the Department of Microbiology of the University of Hong Kong, praised the decision yesterday. He also attended a radio program this morning (19th) and pointed out that there has been a hidden transmission chain among hamsters. Humane destruction is the only option, and a choice must be made between humans and animals.

Another government expert advisor, Professor Xu Shuchang of the Department of Respiratory Medicine at CUHK, also said that it is estimated that the hamsters have been infected before they came to Hong Kong. The hamsters have a high chance of transmitting the virus to humans, and they should be culled from a public health perspective.
