- For many tradition-conscious families, it is a beloved companion throughout the year: "The Oberbairische Fest-Däg- und Alten-Bräuch-Kalender for the Year of the Lord 2022" is already the 35th edition of the popular booklet.

The booklet, published by Iffeldorfer Raab-Verlag, uses text and images to show the reader how lively customs are in Upper Bavaria.

This year, the focus is once again on the district.

Reminder of the patronage day in Beuerberg in the customs calendar

A contribution reminds of the Patronage Day 2021 in Beuerberg.

The festival in honor of the Patrona Bavariae in May was organized by the mountain rifle company Beuerberg-Herrnhausen - but on a much reduced scale due to the pandemic.

And then “the weather was really bad”, as the calendar says.

Instead of the planned field mass, Cardinal Reinhard Marx celebrated a festival service in the monastery church of St. Peter and Paul.

Prominent guests, including Prime Minister Markus Söder, Minister for Economic Affairs Hubert Aiwanger, President of the State Parliament Ilse Aigner and HRH Duke Max and Duchess Elisabeth of Bavaria were there, as the authors of the customs calendar summarize.

A "Waakirchner custom in the Tölzer Land" also finds its place in the calendar.

Under this heading, an article describes the "Weisat-Zopf", which found its way to Rimslrain (municipality of Wackersberg) last year - accompanied by a sonorous parade of the Waakirchner brass band including drummers.

It was a baked braid with a proud length of 4.90 meters.

The recipient of the generously dimensioned pastry was a married couple who received a gift for the birth of their heir.

The boy was 49 centimeters tall at birth.

"In the Tölzer Land, the custom with the Weisat braid is hardly known," says the calendar.

But because the young father came from Waakirchen (Miesbach district), the custom migrated to Rimslrain.

Customs in Upper Bavaria: Pandemic causes uncertainty

Admittedly, the upkeep of many a tradition is also under anxious omens in the new year.

What will the infection situation allow and to what extent?

The authors of the customs calendar, who, according to the foreword, are already receiving support from the third generation in this task, describe how they deal with this uncertainty: “But the most important thing is trust in God.

The certainty that 'Heavenly Mama' is guiding us through this turbulent time through her intercession and our deep prayers is a great help to us.”

The customs calendar is available at many points of sale in the district and on the Internet at www.raab-verlag.info for EUR 16.50.
