Death of a Carthusian by Gérard Vincent: monk and poet

The author of essays and stories looks into the life of a monk with a tumor and no doubt lends some of his own inner experience to his character.


When he was 18, Pierre wanted to be a poet.

He became a monk.

Rimbaud had given him a taste for

"Vertical Speech"

, the same he would discover in the Bible and which ignited him.

He then understood that writing would not open the doors to any realm for him.

At the age of 26, he forever crossed those of the monastery of the Grande Chartreuse.

Twenty-six years later, he learns that he has an inoperable brain tumor.

He has a few months left to live.

He refuses to be hospitalized.
