The Livestock Development Project branch in As-Suwayda encourages breeders to grow smooth cactus, based on the importance of using it as a fodder alternative or as a supportive for basic fodder, which reduces their financial burdens, according to the project stakeholders.

Director of the project branch, Eng. Najat Al-Sulaiman, indicated to the SANA Economic Bulletin that the branch established a field for planting smooth cactus in the Arra spring nursery, in cooperation with the branch of the General Authority for Management, Protection and Development of the Badia, and an area of ​​5 dunums, through which cactus panels are annually distributed to livestock breeders in the Suwayda Governorate. In addition to the governorates of Homs, Hama and Damascus countryside to cultivate and benefit from it as an alternative or supportive fodder for the basic fodder for livestock herds of breeders.

She said: Through the project, to date, about 100,000 tablets of smooth cactus have been distributed, benefiting about 1,000 breeders in the villages of Al-Matonah, Salakhd, Raymah Al-Lahf, Kafr Al-Lahf and Al-Afi local for the project in these villages, in addition to about 50,000 tablets for breeders from outside the governorate.

Regarding its fodder importance, Al-Sulaiman indicated that smooth cactus increases milk production and is characterized by its resistance to drought, as it grows in areas with little rainfall and contributes to soil stabilization.

For his part, Suhail Amer, a cattle breeder from the village of Walga, said that last year he obtained a quantity of cactus panels from the livestock project. He used some of them to feed his cows, while the other part was planted, encouraging the expansion of smooth cactus cultivation to reduce costs for breeders and to build a fence from This plant is about agricultural projects.

Badia’a Qarmoushi, a cow breeder from the village of Al-Afena, stated that she had succeeded in experimenting with planting smooth cactus next to her house to take advantage of the panels or paws after cutting them to feed the cows’ heads.
