The imprisoned Russian opposition leader, Alexei Navalny, had an interview in correspondence with American Time magazine in which he sharply attacked Russian President Vladimir Putin and claimed that it could lead to the disintegration of Russia as a modern state.
"Putin praised the importance of 'stability' in his regime, but in practice it has become a slogan that allows everything, from censorship, through the suppression of peaceful demonstrations to the sale of the election process. The worst thing is that Putin raises the chances of the state disintegrating. "In Moscow, they can only lead to opposite tendencies when a pendulum swings to the other side," the opposition man wrote to the magazine.
Navalny also criticized the United States' handling of Russia during talks on tensions on the Ukrainian border.
"Instead of ignoring Putin's nonsense, the United States accepts his agenda and honestly wanted to arrange a meeting at one level or another. Just like a student in a school being bullied by a larger student," Navalny says.
"They tell Putin 'if you do any prank, we'll impose harsh sanctions.'
Navalny was arrested a little over a year ago after returning to Russia from Germany, where he received medical treatment after being poisoned in a failed operation by Russian intelligence services.
He was prosecuted for corruption offenses and sent to a lengthy prison sentence in a penal colony, where he suffers from harsh conditions but also continues to convey his messages to the world and defy the Russian president.
