Chief Rabbi David Lau launches an attack on Minister of Religions Matan Kahana, and clarifies that even if the conversion reform is approved in the Knesset, it will not determine who is a Jew in the State of Israel, but the Chief Rabbinate.
In an extensive interview to be published tomorrow in the "Shishvat" supplement, the rabbi says that "with all due respect, even if the Knesset determines that a person with 43 degrees heat is healthy - this is not true, and even if a law is passed that does not need cement to build a building, it will not happen. In conversion: the Knesset is not the one to decide who is a Jew, a Jew is a person who accepts the yoke of mitzvos and joins the Jewish people.
"When a child is born in the United States, he is an American.
"If a person who was not born in the United States wants to become a citizen there, he has to go through many obstacles. Whoever was born in the kibbutz is automatically a kibbutznik, but whoever wants to move to the kibbutz has to pass various tests and conditions," says Rabbi Lau.
"The Jewish people are no less than the American nation or a kibbutz. There is a path from generation to generation, and a line that must remain uniform. These are halakhic questions, and there is one address: the Chief Rabbinate. "Data from the Ministry of the Interior, the vast majority of immigrants to Israel are not Jews, so why raise them and then say that there is a problem? Stop it before, if it hurts so much. Why change a law that I went all out, instead of preventing the problem in advance?" .
"Do not come clean"
In the interview, Rabbi Lau, who serves as president of the High Court, refers to repeated attacks by women's organizations on the fact that the courts do not provide solutions to those who refuse a divorce.
"This is a complete injustice. The judges invest hours and hours to finish cases. We do everything to find out what to do, but I can not easily accept the concept of expropriation of kiddushim. When a couple lives together, and years later comes with problems and the law - impossible. "To say there were problems in the beginning. How can one define marriage as a mistake from the first moment?"
"I know their agenda," Rabbi Lau refers to the women's organizations.
"They come in an unclean manner. A lawyer stands in front of you and speaks, and you tell her that she is not helping the client but the opposite, but she is ignoring. She is not interested in the client, but the statement. It is sad. They take advantage of people's hardships."
