The committee investigating the assault on Capitol Hill will be able to review Trump documents after Supreme Court decision

The former Republican president had tried to keep the documents secret, citing that they should be protected by executive privilege. The ruling by the highest court ends a legal battle that began in October.

The Supreme Court on Wednesday rejected former President Donald Trump's request to prevent the National Archives from handing over documents from his Administration to the House committee investigating the assault on Capitol Hill on January 6, 2021.

The court refused to review Trump's appeal of two lower courts' rulings approving the release of the documents.

Judge Clarence Thomas was the only one to say that the highest court should have granted Trump's request to block the release of the documents.

The Supreme Court ruling ends a legal battle that began in October, when Trump sued to stop the National Archives from disclosing documents he said should be protected by executive privilege.

The National Archives is ordered to release information related to the assault on the Capitol

His lawyers asked the court to attract the case because it raised new questions about the extent of a former president's executive privilege.

The Supreme Court, they said, "has not explained what is the standard that must be met to invade the privilege."
