Not only the town parish church in Miesbach needs help from donations so that necessary repairs can be done.

The small portiuncula church in the garden of the former monastery school has to be repaired.

The parish needs support for this.

Sometimes it's the small things that have a big impact.

In the case of the roof of the Portiuncula Church in Miesbach, it is a bird.

"The woodpecker causes trouble," says church curator Siegfried Rummel.

“Where it sounds hollow, it is interesting for him.

He pokes holes in it and sees if he can find something good.” The result: the wooden shingles no longer keep the water out properly – the roof is leaking and has to be repaired.

Two of the eight roof panels were repaired three years ago.

The costs at that time amounted to 24,000 euros.

Now the remaining six are to follow.

Extrapolated, without taking into account the enormous cost increases in construction in the meantime, it comes to over 80,000 euros.

City parish church and parish home burden the reserves

There are reserves, but they are needed completely for the renovation of the parish church (we reported), which shows damage to the west facade, the tower and the canal system of the vicarage.

In addition, there is the new building of the rectory, which has become more expensive by one million euros due to the disposal of contaminated soil.

A small appeal for donations was therefore started in the parish letter.

A special gem

The roof isn't the only weak point of the small octagonal church, built in 1659 in honor of St. Francis, painted in 1862 in the Nazarene style and named after the Porziuncula chapel in Assisi, the place where St. Francis died. Due to the conversion of the neighboring monastery into a children's home, the little church now loses its electricity connection. "The church is also supplied from the monastery, but now the line is being disconnected in the course of the conversion," explains Rummel. In the future, the Portiuncula Church will need its own connection, although it is still unclear from where it should be connected. The next junction box would be on Münchner Strasse at the zebra crossing. But to do this, a line would have to be laid via the monastery meadow, which, as is well known, belongs to the community foundation. That means additional costs.

On the other hand, the considerations of equipping the church with its own water and sewage connection, which would have been easy to do in the course of the monastery renovation, have been settled.

However, this was not approved with a view to possible legionella formation, which could spread to the children's home.

Overall, there is a need for action.

Pastoral officer Kathrin Baumann also sees it this way: "It's not exactly nice to come back with a donation request, but it doesn't help.

The situation isn't getting any better." No damage has yet occurred to the Portiuncula Church, which can be visited every Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

It should stay that way.
