This is how the Likud thwarted a proposal to keep Netanyahu as interim chairman | Israel Today

The party believed that his tenure would prevent chaos in the event that he retires from the Knesset • Likud officials opposed the initiative • Netanyahu's lawyers: the chances of a deal are slim • Tomorrow in the "Israel Hashavua" supplement

This week's events also proved that the political system in Israel has one axis around which everything revolves: Benjamin Netanyahu.

Apparently, the members of the government were preoccupied with their own affairs.

They made decisions, held debates, fought in Corona.

In practice, only one thing occupied them, and that is the question of whether Netanyahu will sign a plea deal or not.

Earlier this week, some Likud Knesset members tried to initiate a move that would allow Netanyahu to continue to chair the party even after he resigned from the Knesset. The party has time to get organized and elect a new chairman.

The Likud's spin into the election of a temporary chairman at the center, and then primaries for the party's leadership among the functionaries, could create real chaos, they thought.

Katz's program

But the initiative was torpedoed.

Some of the party's candidates have made it clear that once Netanyahu signs, he must leave immediately.

Those who cannot be a Knesset member cannot be the head of the Likud movement, the initiators were told.

This is because the party constitution stipulates that the party chairman is a candidate for prime minister. If he can not be the prime minister - then he can not be the party leader, the initiators explained, and the move is buried.

One of the candidates who will not allow the rules to be bent is Israel Katz.

Katz is considered a strong factor in the center.

As the interim chairman - he could be elected. The only one who challenges him there is perhaps Yuli Edelstein. Certainly not Nir Barkat. If he is elected, Katz will be able to try to dissolve the government and form another government under his leadership.

But the other candidates will not sit idly by and see Katz take over the movement through his power at the center.

In recent days, some of them have tried to contact Haim Katz and ask him to demand the position of interim chairman, as the current chairman of the center.

According to the constitution, until elections are held at the center, the chairman of the center himself serves as a temporary chairman.

It is not certain that Haim Katz will go against Israel Katz.

In the past, the two formed a common central axis.

Although the other candidates for the party leadership have made it clear that they are not ready for Netanyahu to remain Likud chairman until the election, they are also not ready for the position of interim chairman to be elected by a person who intends to run for permanent chairmanship. .

The candidates informed Israel Katz that they were opposed to him running for interim chairman and permanent chairman, and threatened that this might dismantle the Likud.

Katz, meanwhile, is not convinced by the threats.

If elected, the other senior Likud members will announce that no political negotiations conducted by Katz will be acceptable to them. Hence - the road to chaos, and perhaps to division - is short.

The deal goes away

Meanwhile, Netanyahu discussed a plea deal with his defense team yesterday.

In recent days, the ombudsman has demanded that the threshold for service work be raised to 6 to 9 months

. However, the prosecution team is preparing to amend the indictment, if this is aided, and Netanyahu's defense team is working to convince him that there will be no better deal.
