The Tennis Club Weilheim is allowed to expand its facility at the Narbonner Ring by two free playgrounds.

Weilheim's building committee unanimously approved the plan on Tuesday - and was pleased with the development of the association.

The planned biotope in this area will not be diminished by this.

Weilheim – Tennis is apparently enjoying increasing popularity in the district town: the tennis hall built five years ago on the site between Narbonner Ring and Kranlöchl has given the Tennis Club (TC) Weilheim “an enormous increase in membership”, according to their own statements.

As a result, however, the capacity limits are reached in summer - because the hall was built in consultation with the district office on the site of two free playgrounds.

The number of outdoor tennis courts has thus been reduced from eleven to nine, as the association emphasizes.

The TC Weilheim has currently rented places in Wielenbach

In order to avoid bottlenecks and longer waiting times, TC Weilheim has rented two free spaces from SV Wielenbach.

However, according to the club, this cannot be "a permanent solution", which is why it has now been asked to be allowed to expand the domestic tennis facility by two outdoor courts.

In the building committee of the Weilheim city council, the tennis club ran into open doors with this building request: The committee unanimously approved the project and the necessary change to the development plan "Narbonner Ring leisure center" in its meeting yesterday Tuesday.

The application is worth supporting, the planning is very compact, according to CSU spokeswoman Marion Lunz-Schmieder.

In this way, the city can “promote mass sport quite cheaply,” emphasized Horst Martin (SPD).

And 2nd Mayor Angelika Flock (CSU) said as the chair of the session: "We are delighted that we have such a successful club in Weilheim."

Does the planned area count as a biotope?

The two new courts are planned southwest of the tennis hall, between the existing courts and Birkenallee.

This is urban land, part of what used to be a natural mini-golf course.

There was some ambiguity in the building committee as to whether the area in question is currently mapped as a biotope - according to Gerd Ratter (ÖDP), there were statements to this effect at a recent meeting of another committee.

But in this case, the district office, which is involved in the construction process, would "immediately raise an objection," as Flock assured.

No contradiction to biodiversity

A few months ago, the Weilheim Agenda 21 applied for the urban meadow to be redesigned into a "biodiversity area" in the interests of biodiversity (we reported).

But the additional tennis courts would not stand in the way of that either, as the building committee agreed.

This area could easily be shifted a little to the north on urban ground.

"That doesn't bite," said Rupert Pentenrieder (BfW), the city council officer for urban green spaces.

It was added to the decision per tennis courts that the "biodiversity area" would not be reduced.
