In June, a 15-year-old was swept away by the Elbe in Hamburg and only found dead days later.

The drowned man's brother blames a friend of the youth for the accident - and is said to have stabbed him with a knife.

Was it vendetta?

Hamburg – In the process of an almost fatal knife attack after a swimming accident on the Elbe, the accused largely admitted to the crime. "I was angry and wanted to hurt him a bit," said the 19-year-old on Thursday at the start of the hearing before the Hamburg district court. But he did not try to kill the youth. "I could find many ways to make him dead. But I didn't want that."

According to the public prosecutor's office, the accused's 15-year-old brother was swept away by the current while bathing in Blankenese on June 18 last year.

The next day, the accused is said to have spoken to the 15-year-old's best friend in the Harburg district.

Then, without warning, he grabbed his shoulder and stabbed him four times in the back with a folding knife.

He acted insidiously and out of base motives.

The body of the drowned brother was only found two days after the fact.

The victim suffered life-threatening internal injuries and required emergency surgery.

Police officers arrested the Romanian at home a few hours later.

After that he was taken into custody.

However, it later turned out that he had already received psychiatric treatment in the past.

The public prosecutor accuses the man of attempted murder.

At the same time, she assumes that he was innocent.

She is therefore seeking placement in a psychiatric clinic.

A report attests the accused schizophrenia.

But he denies this.

"I have no voices in my head.

I don't want to go to a hospital and talk about my problems all the time," he said Thursday.

Rather, he wanted a punishment and jail.

The 19-year-old also commented on the motive: "I thought he had the opportunity to save my brother and didn't do it. So I was angry.” When asked by the presiding judge whether it was revenge, he said: Ever since he was a child, he had known that if something happened, there was revenge. But there are different types of blood revenge: "If someone kills my brother with a gun, I can kill him." In an accident, he can only hurt him a little. In detention, he “realized that it wasn’t good. And I was sorry too.”

At the beginning of the so-called security procedure, the defenders of the 19-year-old had applied twice to exclude the public.

They justified the step with the fact that highly personal matters are discussed during the taking of evidence.

However, the chamber rejected this.

In this case, the public's interest in information outweighs the personal rights of the accused.

Seven more days of negotiations are scheduled for the process until the end of March.
