More and more children with whole-body inflammation are being treated at the Coburg Clinic.

This could be the result of a previous corona infection.

Coburg – so far, children and young people have mostly come through the corona pandemic* quite lightly.

Severe courses were relatively rare in them.

Now the physicians at the Regiomed Klinikum Coburg* are increasingly reporting serious illnesses that they attribute to a previous corona infection.

If left untreated, this disease could even lead to death.

Klinikum Coburg: Children can develop severe inflammation after a corona infection

We are talking about the Multisystem Inflammatory Syndrome in Children (MIS – C) or Pediatric Multisystem Inflammatory Syndrome (PIMS).

Children in particular develop severe inflammatory reactions throughout the body weeks or months after a corona infection.

As the clinic writes in a press release, it does not matter whether the Covid 19 disease * was previously symptom-free or with the typical symptoms of the disease.

The clinic’s report also says: “It is known so far that the immune system of the affected children suddenly goes haywire following a corona infection.” The body unnecessarily ramps up its defenses and fights itself, so to speak organs attacked.

MIS-C or PIMS often manifests itself with fever, skin rashes, severe abdominal pain - reminiscent of appendicitis, irritated and reddened conjunctivae in the eyes and swollen lymph nodes.

Klinikum Coburg: Every fourth child ends up in the intensive care unit

If the children are taken to the clinic or the pediatrician for treatment, the blood test will reveal greatly increased inflammation values.

This could indicate a heart muscle or liver inflammation, the message goes on to say.

“Unfortunately, serious complications such as total circulatory and kidney failure also occur regularly.

Accumulation of water in the abdomen, in the chest cavity or in the pericardium is also often diagnosed.” Every fourth child has to be treated in the intensive care unit.

But parents don't need to panic now.

Treatment with anti-inflammatory agents such as cortisone works very well.

There have only been isolated reports of long-term effects.

However, the data is still very sparse.

According to the clinic, further scientific studies are needed.

Studies from the USA * (based on a study by the American disease protection CDC) have so far shown that vaccination against the corona virus can also protect against the life-threatening whole-body inflammation MIS-C/PIMS.

Children often no longer had to be treated in the hospital or in an intensive care unit.

The message goes on to say: "According to the study, children aged 5-18 years, with chronic diseases and previous pneumonia, who had to be treated in a children's clinic, benefit most from a vaccination."
