The district opened its children's vaccination center on Tölzer Marktstraße on Wednesday.

Five to eleven year olds are vaccinated there twice a week without an appointment.

At the start, 40 children picked up their first dose of Biontech.

Bad Tölz-Wolfratshausen – The entrance is behind the ATMs and bank statement printers of the Sparkasse.

In the past few weeks, the children's vaccination room has been set up in the former branch of the bank at Marktstrasse 34.

Next to the registration desk there are two vaccination booths and an emergency area.

Colorful stickers on the walls depict giraffes, pandas and lions

Along the walls there are small and large chairs, colorful tables, a crawling tunnel in the large waiting area invites you to crawl.

The white walls of the vaccination booths are decorated with cheerful stickers showing giraffes, pandas, lions and other animals.

The design should also ensure "that the children feel comfortable," says vaccination center manager Maximilian Pfandl from the Aicher Group, which operates all centers on behalf of the district.

A conscious decision was made to separate this from the normal vaccination centers, says Florian Streidl from the disaster control management group at the district office.

On the one hand, this is a requirement of the Bavarian Ministry of Health.

On the other hand, it ensures that confusion with the vaccine is ruled out, adds Pfandl.

They are vaccinated with the children's vaccine from Biontech - without making an appointment

The five to eleven year olds are vaccinated exclusively with Biontech.

"This is the only approved children's vaccine," says Pfandl.

However, the dosage is different from that of the adult vaccine.

The vials – i.e. the bottles – would also look different.

"The lid for the adults is purple, the orange for the children," says Pfandl.

On Wednesdays and Fridays from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. vaccinations are given in the rooms on Marktstraße – without prior appointment.

Parents only have to register their children on the portal www.impfzentren.bayern.

The vaccination card and an identity document must then be brought with you.

How big the crowd will be cannot be estimated

Pfandl cannot estimate how big the rush will be.

"The parents who absolutely wanted their children to be vaccinated have already done so in a practice," he says.

Now it's more about "the broad masses", including parents who might want to wait and see.

"We definitely have enough vaccine," says Pfandl.

However, since it is not possible to estimate how great the response is, "we are always in contact with the pediatric practices, which can also get vaccines from us".

Nine-year-old Florian is the first to be vaccinated

The first to be vaccinated on Wednesday is nine-year-old Florian.

The boy came with his parents - and mom "is more nervous than the son," she admits.

"He wanted to come here himself - also because his siblings have all been vaccinated," the parents say.

Meanwhile, Florian bravely sits down on the stool, has a brief chat with Dr.

Klaus Fiedler, pushes his sleeve up and coolly masters the short spades.

As a reward, the nine-year-old can choose a toy.

Colored pencils, a puzzle and other items are available.

A total of 40 children will be vaccinated by the end of the first day.

"We don't persuade anyone.

You can also just go back without vaccination."

dr Klaus Fiedler is actually a gynecologist – and already retired. "But since the first minute", when the vaccination campaign started, "I've been working as a vaccinator," says the 69-year-old. So far, the Munich driver has mainly been used in the centers in Wolfratshausen and Bad Tölz. Now he is one of two doctors in the children's vaccination room twice a week. He's looking forward to the task. "That's something nice here." In general, he would like to "encourage everyone to get vaccinated". This is the only way to prevent the virus from spreading or reduce the risk of a serious course of the disease. "The vaccination is harmless - also compared to what can happen with an infection," says the doctor. Incidentally, he is also happy about parents who are still undecided. “We advise and we don't persuade anyone. You can also just go back without vaccination.”

Shitstorm in the run-up to the opening

Pfandl knows that children's vaccinations are a red rag for some.

"We got some Shitstorm," says the vaccination center manager.

Especially in social media and online comments there was criticism.

“For me personally, nothing matters.

But of course you keep that in the back of your mind.”

And how are things going in the two "normal" vaccination centers in Tölz and Wolfratshausen?

"Very calm," says Pfandl.

"But that's the case in all vaccination centers." It also applies to everyone that doses that expired at the beginning of the year had to be disposed of (we reported in the Bavarian part).

Bad Tölz-Wolfratshausen is no exception.

In general, of course, attempts are made to avoid something like this - for example through timely redistribution.

Pfandl: "The vaccination centers are therefore in close contact."
