(CNN Spanish) --

The president of Colombia, Iván Duque, referred this Thursday on his Twitter account to the explosion of a car bomb in Saravena, in the department of Arauca, stating that it is a "miserable terrorist attack" and a attack "that all Colombians reject. Our public force will continue to strengthen territorial control in the area to corner these armed groups and guarantee the safety of the population."

The reaction comes after unknown individuals activated a car bomb on Wednesday in the town of Saravena, in the department of Arauca, located on the border with Venezuela, in eastern Colombia.

The explosion left a balance of one person dead and 5 injured, according to local authorities.

The explosion occurred around 11:30 pm in a central area of the town, near government buildings and a headquarters of social organizations.

General Jorge Luis Vargas, director of the Police, also stated on his Twitter account: "We reject the attack in Arauca... We have arranged all the institutional capacity to find the material and intellectual authors."

Meanwhile, the social organization Centro Oriente also referred to the explosion, in which its offices were affected, on its Twitter account: "We denounce an attack against the headquarters of the social organizations of the Centro Oriente in Saravena, Arauca. In the attack some social leaders were injured."

President Iván Duque was together with the Minister of Defense, Diego Molano, and the military leadership last weekend in the department of Arauca, leading a security council in the face of the violent events that have occurred in that region in recent days.

At the beginning of this year, at least 23 people died at the hands of illegal armed groups in the midst of a confrontation between ELN guerrillas and FARC dissidents, according to reports from the Colombian Prosecutor's Office and the Ombudsman's Office.

In the area, illegal armed groups dispute territorial control for arms and drug trafficking.

Organizations for the defense of human rights have asked the government to guarantee the lives of the peasant communities that find themselves in the middle of the crossfire in that territory.

For this reason, hundreds of people have fled that region and today they are displaced in the urban centers of Arauca, generating a humanitarian crisis, as reported by the Colombian Ombudsman.

The department of Arauca is a border area with Venezuela and there, according to several reports from the authorities, there is a presence of illegal armed groups from the ELN, FARC dissidents, drug traffickers and smugglers.

In addition to the situation of violence, there is the phenomenon of migration from the neighboring country.
