A truck carrying explosives collided with a motorbike in western Ghana on Thursday, causing a massive explosion that killed several people, injured many and destroyed a significant number of buildings, authorities said.

"An explosion in Apiate, near Bogoso, in the Western region, caused the loss of human life and the destruction of property"

, declared on Twitter the president of Ghana Nana Akufo-Addo, without giving a precise assessment.

“It is a truly sad, unfortunate and tragic event

,” added the president, while offering his condolences to the families of the victims.

"Initial investigations have established that a mining vehicle carrying explosives (...) collided with a motorcycle, causing an explosion

," local police said in a statement. Bogoso is a mining town located about 300 kilometers west of Accra, the capital of this West African country rich in mineral resources.

According to the police,

"most of the victims were rescued and admitted to several hospitals and clinics"

in the municipalities around Bogoso. At Apiata hospital, at least

"five victims, including a five-year-old child in serious condition"

, are currently being cared for, Dr. Joseph Darko told AFP.

“Other people have been transferred to other health centers,”

he added.

The police also asked the surrounding villages to open

“their schools and their churches”

to be able to receive possible additional wounded.

Reinforcements were deployed on the spot and people near the site of the explosion were asked to go to neighboring villages, police said, while calling for calm.
