Against the background of the current omicron situation, Karl Lauterbach announced a prioritization of PCR tests.

According to Lauterbach, he wants to submit a draft resolution for this in the Prime Ministers’ Conference on Monday (January 24, 2022).

"We won't keep it up, we will get such a high number of cases that we will have to distribute the PCR tests."

The current omicron variant of the corona virus was previously considered less dangerous than the previously dominant delta variant*.

However, the risk of infection from the current Omicron variant* was classified as far more contagious.

It is unimaginable how aggressive a combination of both corona variants could be.

Karl Lauterbach urgently warned against such a variant.

Accordingly, such a "recombined virus variant" could come to Germany next autumn, according to the minister.

Reports of a so-called "Deltakron" variant were recently received from Greece.

However, this turned out to be a suspected laboratory error.

Lauterbach near Lanz (ZDF): Omicron wave will bring several hundred thousand new corona infections per day

In the Markus Lanz (ZDF) talk show, Lauterbach warned of the upcoming omicron wave.

Several hundred thousand new corona infections per day are expected for mid-February.

"In my opinion, we can't get out of the mess without compulsory vaccination."

Compared to other EU countries, such as France, Germany is more at risk due to the low vaccination rate.

Due to the low vaccination rate, especially in the older groups, Germany will be less able to deal with the omicron wave than other countries, according to Lauterbach.

This could overload the intensive care units.

A super mutant, as described by Karl Lauterbach, would also be prevented by a higher vaccination rate.

The infectiologist Christoph Spinner told the Focus Online news portal that mutations would always occur if the number of infections was high.

According to the report, Spinner says that the more people who have had contact with the corona virus, the lower the probability of a completely new mutation variant.

At Markus Lanz, Karl Lauterbach spoke more radically than ever before about compulsory vaccination.

"We are currently protecting with our measures and also victims, starting with the children, we are protecting the unvaccinated," said the SPD politician.

He continued to say that "there is now a duty".

Markus Lanz asked the SPD politician why no draft law had been submitted by the traffic light coalition on compulsory vaccination.

Lanz commented on the behavior of Olaf Scholz* as follows: "There can't be that much schizophrenia."

Karl Lauterbach supported his party colleague Scholz and pointed out that he had to process all applications neutrally and that this was not possible if he were the applicant himself.

Formally he could understand Lauterbach's statement, but he didn't think it was easy to convey, explained extremism researcher Matthias Quent.

Government coalitions have already introduced draft legislation in the past.

"In view of the urgency of the situation, it is personally incomprehensible," says the scientist.

It remains to be seen whether there will be compulsory vaccination in Germany.

In neighboring Austria, compulsory vaccination has already been decided*.
