Former Chancellor Angela Merkel has received a job offer: UN chief António Guterres wants her as a UN adviser.

Merkel has already made up her mind.

Berlin/New York – Angela Merkel has not been German chancellor for a few weeks.

And there was already a new job offer for the 67-year-old - which she rejected, however, as the

dpa

reports.

UN head António Guterres had made the former chancellor a lucrative offer in a letter: she could have chaired a high-ranking body at the UN.

But Angela Merkel picked up the phone, thanked her and immediately rejected the new post.

This was announced by the ex-Chancellor's office on Wednesday.

And this is what the vacancy would have looked like: Angela Merkel* could have become chair of the UN Advisory Board on Public Goods.

These include goods that should potentially serve the entire population of the world, for example the ozone layer, but also international regulations on global trade or flight safety.

So it would have been an extremely important post for the world population that the ex-Chancellor could have grabbed.

Angela Merkel gets a job offer - but she has other plans

According to her own statements, which she made in October to the

Süddeutsche Zeitung

*, Angela Merkel has other plans for her retirement: the former Chancellor said that she wanted to use her retirement to read, sleep in and think about what she actually really interested. Merkel had also repeatedly emphasized that after 16 exhausting years as chancellor*, she wanted to rest and not accept any appointments. So it is unlikely that she will devote herself to a new, challenging job just a few weeks after the end of her term and Olaf Scholz* (SPD) taking office.

According to dpa, the United Nations also had little hope from the start that Angela Merkel would accept the position at the UN headquarters in New York.

Merkel certainly has enough opportunities after her chancellorship: a survey* recently confirmed that she is still the most popular politician in Germany and that her successor Olaf Scholz is stealing the show.

Angela Merkel gets a job offer: It was about this UN position

The Advisory Board on Global Public Goods that Merkel was set to chair is one of Guterres' flagship projects on United Nations reform.

The Secretary-General said: "I will ask a high-level advisory board, led by former leaders, to identify global public goods and other areas of common concern where improvements in governance are most urgently needed."
